Zona Tango
Elephant Room, Friday, March 14

If you were lucky enough to be at the Elephant Room for the U.S. premiere of Zona Tango, then you know that all electronic music is not created equal. Blood ties between Spain, France, and Argentina are often difficult to tease out in the contemporary world, but a spin through the back catalog of this Buenos Aires trio offered a glimpse into the promise that taped music holds for keeping old styles alive. Bandleader Pedro Menéndez, equally at home singing, blowing soprano sax, and slinging the accordion, dealt with borrowed instruments and a sporadically noisy crowd as he and his partners in crime, bassist Fito Vega and percussionist Gerardo Stubrin, played over prerecorded beats and tones looped through the sound system. Shot through with bossa nova rhythms and tango inflections, they resurrected Astor Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino" and notched an original "La France" inspired by the surreal, beloved film Amélie. The first half of the set drew from the 2004 release Electronico, while the latter compositions drew from 2006's Brazil Tango. In the modern world, it's a bitch to distinguish one nation's lounge from another, but even playing on instruments that didn't belong to them, Menéndez and company pulled it off.

BRAZILTANGO
Electro Bossa & Tango

The first innovative surprising mixture between two strong and apparently distant genres.
Freshness and warmth of bossa, nostalgy and sensuality of tango, complement one another on original compositions and personal arrangements of the famous pieces 'Adios Nonino' (Astor Piazzolla) and 'Corcovado' (A.C.Jobim.
An outstanding work that pursues quality in musical research and achieves an extremely successful interpretation by the musicians of the group.

ZONA TANGO BIO:

Borned in France at the Sena Riverside, in the heart of Paris, listening to some subtle tango beats…From there, high flights over loops and electronic sounds preserving the strength and nostalgy of Buenos Aires and the bandoneon sound...

After a long stay in Spain and France featuring music of his own as well as traditional tango on festivals and ‘milongas’, Pedro Menéndez - Argentine composer and multinstrumentalist distinguished for an unique extensive trayectory of quests on rythms of his country folk and tango music- came back to Buenos Aires with new interesting views, feeling the need of experiment and open a different space inside the emerging genre of electronic tango by going beyond the simple fusion of modern tango and electronic sounds adding other elements like jazz and Latin / Afro-american rythms.

He joined talented and expressive bandoneonist Oscar Fasanelli together with Maurice Lévar on electronics and finally the first CD of ‘Zona Tango’: ‘ELECTRÓNICO’ (2004) was born, distinguished by an unique, solid composition style and a varied, surprising and not conventional instrumentation.

As a reflect of the change and evolution on urban cosmopolitan music, on June 2006 Zona Tango released his second discographic work introducing to the world the first innovative mixture between ELECTRO BOSSA & TANGO: ‘BRAZILTANGO’, including 9 original compositions as well as personal arrangements of the famous pieces ‘Adiós Nonino’ (Astor Piazzolla) and ‘Corcovado’ (Antonio Carlos .Jobim).

ZONA TANGO is currently made up of Pedro Menéndez on Keyboards – Guitar – Bandoneon – Winds (Flute / Soprano sax / Oboe / Trombon) -Voice and Composition, Fito Vega on Bass – Electric doublebass and Sequences and Gerardo Stubrin on Drums and Percussion.

VANGUARD JAZZ + A NEW TANGO / FOLK CONCEPTUALITY

PEDRO MENÉNDEZ is a prolific composer, more than 300 pieces for the most varied ensembles.

His own and personal composition style as well as his vast discography are the reflect of his long trayectory of quests on the rythms of his country folk music -tango, candombe, chacarera- and the strong influences of jazz, bossa nova and contemporary classical expressions.
